Stump grinding in Toledo clears away the ugly, trip-hazard stump left after a tree comes down. A machine chews the stump into chips below the soil line so you can reseed, lay sod, plant a garden, or put in a new tree. Call (419) 820-4750 for a free quote from a local tree crew.
What stump grinding involves
A stump grinder is a machine with a spinning, toothed wheel. The operator sweeps it back and forth across the stump until it's ground down, usually 6 to 12 inches below grade. Surface roots near the stump can be ground too. What's left is a pile of wood chips and soil.
Grinding is different from full stump removal, which pulls out the whole root ball. Removal leaves a big hole and is rarely needed for a lawn. Ask for it only if you plan to build or pour concrete in that exact spot.
Reasons to grind a stump
- It's in the way of mowing, or it's a trip hazard for kids.
- New sprouts keep coming up from the roots (common with silver maples, cottonwoods and Callery pears).
- Rotting stumps can attract carpenter ants and termites.
- You want to plant a new tree nearby. (Plant a few feet away from the old spot, since chips and old roots take years to break down.)
- The stump from a dead ash tree is the last reminder of the emerald ash borer, and you're ready to move on.

What affects the price
- Diameter. Most crews price by the inch across the widest part of the stump.
- Depth. Deeper grinding takes longer.
- Access. Backyards with narrow gates need a smaller machine. Mention gate width when you call.
- Number of stumps. Several stumps in one visit usually cost less each.
- Cleanup. Hauling the chips away and adding topsoil cost extra.
ContractorPlus's 2026 estimate for grinding one stump in Toledo is $245.70 to $491.40, with an average of $351. Many providers have a minimum charge. See the cost guide for more.
Before grinding: call 811
Ohio law requires a call to the Ohio Utilities Protection Service (OUPS) by dialing 811 before digging. Gas, electric and cable lines are often buried near old trees. Ask the crew whether they've placed the 811 request, and leave a few business days for utilities to mark their lines.
Also watch for buried sprinkler lines, invisible dog fences and old clay sewer laterals. Toledo has many older homes where roots and sewer lines grew up together.
Tree lawn stumps
If the stump is in the tree lawn between the sidewalk and curb, it belongs to the city. Report it to Engage Toledo at 419-936-2020 and ask about stump removal. Don't hire a private crew to grind a city stump without permission. Our street tree permit guide explains why.
What to do with the chips
Stump chips make decent mulch around shrubs once they've aged a bit. Many people rake most of the chips out of the hole, fill it with topsoil, and seed it in early fall or spring. If you'd rather not deal with them, ask the crew to haul them off, or see our guide to yard waste disposal in Toledo.
Questions to ask
- How deep will you grind, and will you get the surface roots?
- Will you call 811 before you start?
- Will your machine fit through my gate?
- Do you haul the chips and backfill the hole?
- Will the grinder leave ruts? Do you use mats or plywood on soft lawns?
What to tell the provider
Tell them how many stumps, the width of each (a tape measure across the top is perfect), whether they're in the front or back yard, your narrowest gate width, and where any septic lines or sprinkler pipes run.
